Football powerhouses Bellevue and Skyline headline the Sept. 7 Emerald City Kickoff Classic at newly renovated Husky Stadium.

In addition to the reigning 3A (Bellevue) and 4A (Skyline) state champion showdown, the classic will feature Bothell taking on Coeur d’Alene (Idaho), Lynden battling King’s, and Roosevelt meeting Seattle Prep.

“The return of the Kickoff Classic to Seattle at the brand new Husky Stadium with the four matchups will be a great Saturday,” said Mike Colbrese, Washington Interscholastic Activities Association executive director. “Our thanks to the University of Washington for hosting this annual event.”

The marquee game offers a pair of 2012 undefeated teams. Bellevue has captured 10 out of the last 12 3A state championships. Last year, the Wolverines completed their third-straight undefeated season. Their last loss came against Skyline in 2010.

The Spartans, meanwhile, lost their last meeting to Bellevue in 2011. Skyline has claimed four out of the last five 4A state championships.

Bothell was a state semifinalist in 2009 and a quarterfinalist in 2010. The Cougars have played in three Kickoff Classic games, going 1-2. They will get a shot at one of the premier teams from neighboring Idaho. Coeur d’Alene was the 5A (the largest Idaho classification) runner-up in 2012 and state champion in 2010 and 2011. Coeur d’Alene is making its second trip to the Kickoff Classic after a 32-14 victory over Moses Lake in 2011.

The third game is another premier cross-classification contest, with 2A reigning champion Lynden hosting 1A King’s. Lynden’s lone loss last season was to the Knights. King’s had high hopes last year, but lost to eventual state champ Montesano in the quarterfinals.

For the first in nine years of the event, Century Link/Qwest Field hosted the Kickoff Classic. However, with scheduling conflicts in 2012 and 2013, the game has moved locations. Last year, the Kickoff Classic was played at Roos Field in Cheney.

This year’s edition will be the second event at the new Husky Stadium. The Washington Huskies’ kick off the season at home against Boise State on Aug. 31.

Fans will get an early opportunity to view the first class facility. Tickets for the event are $15 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens. The ticket includes all four games.
