Wrestling: Auburn Riverside narrowly beats Auburn on the district mat

Auburn Mountainview finishes twelfth and sends a pair to state.

Boys wrestlers from the three Auburn School District high schools competed at the Region 3 District Wrestling Tournament at Todd Beamer High School on Feb. 10. Auburn Riverside edged out the Trojans for fourth place out of 21 teams competing by just 3.5 points, 123.5-120

The Ravens are sending four wrestlers to Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 16-17.

Auburn Riverside had just one district champ, Chance Hanson (113), who won his weight devision. Three other Ravens — Payton Eklund (2nd, 126), Parker Scheschy (144, 3rd) and Austin Ramoie (285, 2nd) — snagged podium positions. The lone Raven qualifier who didn’t finish top three was Gibson Ayling (150), who took fourth.

Auburn also had a really strong showing. The Trojans are sending four wrestlers to state as well. Bryce Rowland (144) took home the first place medal for his performance at 144 pounds. The Trojans have a pair of 126 pounders going to state — Fabian Gallardo-Luna (3rd) and Arvin Ariaye (4th) are moving on to the Tacoma Dome. The final two Trojans are Junior Leapai (285) and Taras Onika (150), rounding out the Auburn lineup heading to Mat Classic XXXV.

Despite finishing third among the Auburn schools, Auburn Mountainview placed twelfth out of the 21 participating schools. Mountainview is sending a pair of wrestlers to Tacoma following the district tournament. Yousif Hesham placed third at 285 pounds and Jayden Chupa (106) placed fifth.
