Auburn School Board to honor custodian, student | Briefs

The Auburn School District Board of Directors recognizes Candace Gerlt, custodian at Dick Scobee Elementary, for her outstanding service at 7 p.m., Monday, April 24 at Auburn Mountainview High School, 28900 124th Ave. SE

Gerlt started in the ASD as a substitute custodian and landed a full-time position almost four years later.

“We have awesome people in our building, and I love the teamwork in our district,” Gerlt said.

The school board also will recognize Gus Bronk, a senior at Auburn High School, for being an outstanding student.

Bronk is involved in a variety of activities at Auburn High. He is an ASB officer, a leader in the TREAD First Robotics program and a member of the National Honor Society. He also participates in numerous community service projects that impact Auburn High and the entire community.

He has a 4.0 and plans to attend the University of Washington next year.

Kindergarten registration remains open

Families with children who will be 5 by Aug. 31 are encouraged to register their child for kindergarten. Registration is open at all Auburn elementary schools. Auburn provides free, all-day kindergarten at every elementary school.

Most elementary schools are hosting a Welcome to Kindergarten event.

Hazelwood, April 26, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

• Arthur Jacobsen, April 26, 4 p.m.

• Arthur Jacobsen, April 27, 8:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

• Terminal Park, May 2, 5-6 p.m.

• Washington, May 2, 5-6 p.m.

• Chinook, May 4, 5-6 p.m.

• Lake View, May 10, 4:30-6 p.m.

• Alpac, May 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Families of students who will attend Dick Scobee, Evergreen Heights, Lea Hill or Pioneer are welcome to contact the school directly to set up an individual appointment to learn more about the kindergarten program.

When registering, families should bring the student’s official birth certificate and current immunization information. Once registered, families will receive information on kindergarten screening dates in the spring.
