In King County, 960 motorists were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), and statewide, law enforcement officers arrested 3,812 drivers for DUI.

Those were the results of the holiday DUI enforcement campaign (Nov. 24 to Jan. 2) released today.

Last year during the same time period, officers in King County on routine and extra patrols arrested 876 people for DUI.

In King County, the Auburn, Bellevue, Black Diamond, Burien, Clyde Hill, Covington, Des Moines, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Issaquah, Kent, Kirkland, Maple Valley, Mercer Island, Normandy Park, North Bend, Pacific, Redmond, Renton, Sammamish, Seatac, Seattle, Snoqualmie, and Tukwila Police Departments and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra emphasis patrols, with the support of the King County Target Zero Task Force. The extra patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

During 2010, drinking drivers killed 188 people, representing more than 40 percent of the 458 people who died on Washington’s roadways.
