Some health plans covering adult kids early

Several of the largest health plans in Washington state are beginning to offer coverage for adult children up to age 26 – well before the new requirement takes effect on Oct. 1.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires all health plans that cover dependents to extend the coverage to adult children up to age 26 beginning Oct. 1. But many health plans nationwide are beginning this coverage as early as June 1.

“I’m very pleased that some of our largest health plans – including Premera, Group Health, Aetna, KPS, and Kaiser Permanente – are starting this important reform early,” said Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler. “We’re encouraging other plans to follow their lead.

“Normally, health plans are required to submit filings for review before they change their benefits,” Kreidler added. “But we’re waiving that requirement so families can get coverage as soon as possible.”

If your health plan is not listed above, contact them directly to see if they plan on offering this coverage early. If you get your health insurance from your employer, check with your human resources department.
