“A Couple of Blaguards”, the rollicking autobiographical Irish comedy written by award-winning authors (and brothers) Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt will be presented as part of the City of Auburn’s BRAVO Season for one-night only on Friday at 7:30 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center.

Before Angela’s Ashes and A Monk Swimming made “McCourt” a household name, the two McCourt brothers, Frank and Malachy, introduced audiences to their charming childhood tales in “A Couple of Blaguards”. Performed by Howard Platt and Jarlath Conroy, “A Couple of Blaguards” is a fast-paced romp with bittersweet recollections, ferocious humor and a parade of colorful characters.

“This show is the result of Frank and me listening to the stories of our elders which in turn tunes the ear, the eye and the tongue to observe and give voice to even the most trivial of events,” Malachy McCourt said. “I think we had more fun than anyone writing and performing Blaguards, which has become an affectionate term for the rowdy, outgoing, and sometimes drinking sort of boys. If you don’t have a good evening, you should have yourself checked to make sure you haven’t died during the day.”

Playwright and author Frank McCourt was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Limerick, Ireland. He spent 27 years teaching in the New York City public school system before embarking on a writing career. After retiring from teaching, Frank and his brother performed their two-man show, “A Couple of Blaguards”, a musical review about their Irish youth. Frank’s childhood memoir, Angela’s Ashes, spent 117 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was the winner of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. Frank passed away in 2009.
