ACCES (Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services) hosts a free community workshop on pet first aid and CPR at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reber Ranch, 28606 132nd Ave. SE, Kent.

The workshop includes an overview of basic anatomy, how to obtain vital signs, types and signs of shock, orthopedic injuries and basic bandaging.

The seconds, minutes and hours following an emergency can be critical in determining the outcome. ACCES’ goal with this program is to provide pet owners the tools they need to help save their pet’s life.

ACCES instructor Jon Wieringa has worked in veterinary medicine for more than 25 years and has been teaching versions of the course to search and rescue and police K-9 handlers as well as pet owners for more than fifteen years.

In his free time, Wieringa is a search and rescue K-9 handler and an EMT for King County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue. Jon will be joined onsite by members of the ACCES medical team.

Participating pet owners will have the opportunity to apply what they learn on ACCES’ CPR canine dummy, Casper, as well as the ACCES workshop canine volunteers.
