In a formal swearing-in ceremony in Olympia today, the State Rep. Katrina Asay officially took over the duties of representing residents of the 30th Legislative District.

Asay was sworn-in by Supreme Court Justice Susan Owens at 11 a.m. in the House Chambers. Former Rep. Skip Priest vacated the seat Dec. 1 after being elected and sworn-in to serve as mayor of Federal Way.

“Today is an exciting day, but mostly I feel honored and privileged to have earned the confidence of citizens in the 30th Legislative District,” said Asay, R-Milton. “Former Rep. Skip Priest served our district with integrity and has been a solid voice on issues area residents hold dear. I look forward to continuing the good work he has done on behalf of the district.”

Asay said she understands the challenges facing the next Legislature and is ready to address them head-on.

“My goal is to set the state on a course that builds a solid and sustainable plan for the future,” Asay said. “I ran for state office because I am discouraged with the direction the majority in Olympia is taking this state. I know difficult decisions lay ahead, but the people of Washington expect each legislator to show leadership in the face of the state’s dire financial situation.”

She has experience with tough budget choices, Asay added.

“When I became the mayor of Milton six years ago, the city was nearly bankrupt. But with hard work, tough decisions and leadership, I was able to balance the budget,” Asay said. “It was not easy, but I am ready to lead the way in addressing the $5.7 billion budget shortfall. My work in balancing budgets at the local level, addressing complex transportation issues and standing strong on the core values of my communities will lend itself well to finding solutions that move Washington forward with sound budgeting practices and help retain and create private-sector jobs.”

Asay will take part in the Legislature’s interim committee days which begins Monday and is scheduled to end Friday. She will participate in new legislator orientation, the House committee hearing process and House Republican Caucus activities during the week.

The 30th Legislative District includes Federal Way, Algona, Pacific and portions of Auburn, Milton and Des Moines.
