Auburn boy, 8, drowns at Lake Roesiger

Medical Examiner says Cooper W. Howat died of freshwater drowning

An eight-year-old Auburn boy drowned June 23 at Lake Roesiger in Snohomish County after swimming to a floating platform and failing to surface.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday identified the boy as Cooper W. Howat. It gave the cause of death as freshwater drowning and the manner as accident.

The Snohomish County Dive Team and Marine Unit responded to a home in the 2300 block of S. Lake Roesiger Road after 911 calls reported that a boy had failed to surface about 2:20 p.m. A Sheriff’s Office helicopter also responded to help with the search and rescue efforts. Divers located Howat at about 3:20 p.m. and a fire department aid crew transported him to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett.

As weather improves and outdoor activity around lakes and rivers increases, people should remember to wear personal flotation devices when playing on or near the water. This applies particularly to children.
