Apple Health for Kids – a new state initiative aimed at streamlining applications for children’s medical coverage – is offering two Auburn events to assist struggling families.

The program will help enroll eligible children at Children’s Home Society, 4388 Auburn Way N, from 1-7:30 p.m. today, and again at HealthPoint Auburn, 126 Auburn Ave., fourth floor, from 1-6:30 p.m. Friday.

The events are part of Cover the Uninsured Week (March 22-28). The events will provide health insurance enrollment assistance.

Statewide there are approximately 70,000 children without health insurance. Many of these families are eligible, but parents do not know their children qualify for free or low-cost health coverage.

For example, a family of four with a monthly household income of up to $5,513 may qualify.

Apple Health for Kids is free for children in families below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level ($36,620 for a family of three). Families above that level may be eligible for the same coverage at low cost: $20 a month per child for families below 250 percent of poverty and $30 a month per child for families below 300 percent of poverty. (The premiums max out at two per family, so no family would pay more than $60 a month in premiums.)
