The Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) has selected Dale Johnson, orchestra teacher at Auburn High School and Rainier Middle School, to be inducted into the WMEA Hall of Fame.

The Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) has selected Dale Johnson, orchestra teacher at Auburn High School and Rainier Middle School, to be inducted into the WMEA Hall of Fame.

Johnson and nine other inductees will be honored at the Feb. 18 WMEA state conference in Yakima. Johnson’s name will be inscribed on the Wall of Fame, housed in the new music building at Central Washington University.J

ohnson also was named the 2009 WMEA Outstanding Music Educator of the Year.

The Auburn Mountainview High School Roar of the Lions Marching Band took third place at the Sunset Festival of Bands in Sumner on Oct. 29. The band scored 72.6 in the finals, the program’s highest mark in competition since the opening of the school in 2005. Sean Happenny and Annette Harnish won the Best Drum Majors Caption Award. The festival was an open-class event, without regard to size or division, making the achievement even more notable. Auburn Mountainview was the smallest marching band in the field. …

Eleven Auburn Riverside High School students were selected into the All-State Honor Groups sponsored by the WMEA and the National Association for Music Education. Students prepared individual auditions consisting of three-four musical etudes and scales in October. Winners were announced Nov. 7. The students are: Judith Kim (orchestra); Claire Kerbs (orchestra); Dahae Cheong (orchestra); Kyle Stocker (choir); EJ De Los Angeles (choir); Adam Benabid (band); Ariana Kupai (band); Steven Summers (band); Katherine Nash (band); Jade Swepston (band); Sumner Brock (band). The musicians will participate in the 58th annual WMEA All-State Band, Orchestra, Choir, Jazz Band and/or Jazz Choir in Yakima on Feb. 17-20. Top high school musicians in each of the musical genres will rehearse under the direction of world-renowned conductors and present a gala concert at the end of the weekend. …

The Auburn School District automotive technology program has been awarded 24 new Kohler engines for the program’s small gas engine classes. The 24 engines retail for approximately $6,000 and are excellent training aids for the small gas engine program. …

The school district has been awarded the 2011 School Psychology Services Award by the Washington State Association of School Psychologists (WSASP). Auburn’s school psychology team was honored during the WSASP fall conference in Vancouver, B.C., on Nov. 10-12. The award recognizes departments, schools, districts, clinics, hospitals or other corporate entities that exemplify effective school psychology, practice in assessment intervention, consultation, education supervision or research/evaluation.
