Don Treuter has an extra pep in his step today.
The 70-year-old Auburn resident and retired car salesman won $250,000 on the draw game, Mega Millions.
“Before today the largest amount I ever won was $600,” Treuter said.
Treuter purchased his ticket from his favorite grocery store, Auburn’s Main Street Market.
“I’ve lived up the street from that store for 20 years. I couldn’t believe it when I saw that I won,” Treuter said. “I asked Rob (Gerson), the owner of the store, to check the ticket because I thought it was a mistake.”
It was no mistake.
“We are really excited for Don,” Gerson said. “He’s a really nice guy, and all my employees love him. It’s great someone won that we see every day.
“Auburn is a really lucky place right now since someone just hit the Lotto jackpot a month ago.”
The winner Gerson referred to was Jack Poltz Jr., who won $6.4 million playing Lotto in July and bought his ticket at Top Food & Drug on Auburn Way North.
Not only is Auburn lucky, Washington’s Lottery players across the state were lucky playing Mega Millions and Powerball recently. This week alone, three winning second-tier tickets were sold in Washington.
Second-tier tickets are Mega Millions or Powerball tickets that match all five numbers, but not the Mega Ball or Powerball. There is an unclaimed prize of $250,000 from a Mega Millions ticket purchased in Lakewood from the same drawing where Treuter won. There’s also another big unclaimed prize out there for a $200,000 Powerball second-tier jackpot that was sold in Tumwater for Wednesday’s drawing.
Lotto officials advise participants to check their tickets.
Treuter plans to pay off bills with his winnings and put the rest in the bank.
Auburn’s Main Street Market on East Main Street and the retailer will receive a $2,500 retail selling bonus for Treuter’s big win.
