Auburn Riverside girls hoop heads into showdown with rival Federal Way

The Auburn Riverside girls basketball team earned a rematch with South Puget Sound League 4A North Division rivals Federal Way with a 78-39 win over Graham-Kapowsin in the West Central District III tournament on Friday.

Up 14-13 after the first quarter, the Ravens (18-6) scored 25 points in the next frame, while holding the Eagles (18-5) to just four points.

The Ravens outscored Graham-Kapowsin 39-22 in the second half to earn the win and a guaranteed berth in the state tourney.

Mercedes Wetmore scored a game-high 24 points, with Nicole Jackson adding 18 and sophomore post Kat Cooper chiming in with 12 points.

Graham-Kapowsin was led by Kylee Parker who scored 14 points.

The Ravens will play Federal Way (20-4) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Puyallup High School. The contest marks the third time this season the two teams have met. The teams split their regular season meetings and Federal Way defeated Auburn Riverside 66-63 in a SPSL North tiebreaker earlier this month.

In the three games since that loss, the Ravens have averaged more than 78 points per game, while holding opponents to just under 38 points per game.

The winner of the Federal Way versus Auburn Riverside game will play either Puyallup (13-10) or Kentwood (23-0) in the district title game, to be conducted 8 p.m. this Saturday at Puyallup. The loser will play for the No. 3 and 6 seeds into the state 4A tourney.
