A ruptured fire hydrant and a broken water main caused minor flooding on 8th Street from F Street to H Street Northeast starting at about 4 a.m. Friday.

Shards of glass scattered around the broken hydrant led Auburn police to conclude that the most likely culprit was a hit-and-run driver.

The City closed 8th Street in the area to all traffic for hours while workers scrambled to effect repairs. By 8 a.m. workers had exposed the main and fire hydrant connection and started fixing the damage. By noon, they had fully restored water service, and by 4 p.m. all clean up and repairs were completed and the street was reopened.

Nobody was hurt or had to be evacuated. The City had asked residents to shelter in place.

Leah Garza, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, said the closing of the road cost her an unwelcome day off from work.

“I couldn’t get to my job at Swedish Hospital in Seattle,” Garza said.

As of 4:30 p.m., Auburn police were still looking for the hit-and-run driver.

“It’s pending,” said an officer at the scene.
