Smith’s work is on display April 29 to June 1 at the City Hall Gallery, 25 W. Main St. It is free and open to the public.

A special opening reception is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28 at the gallery.

As a 1968 graduate of Auburn High School, Smith looks forward to returning to his hometown to showcase his artwork.

“My Professional career of 40 years dealt with issues defining the worst and best of history, human nature, and what ugly things man can do to men and women, issues dealing with isolation, captivity and surviving hostile environments,” he said. “It was an interesting, wonderful way to make a living. It was also an awesome reality check to the real world. Growing up in the small town of Pacific near Auburn was rich with natural history, extraordinary people and great schools, all who have influenced my work today. I’m striving to reflect a more human element (even with natural subjects) to my work while not stepping back into replication.”

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Auburn Arts Commission and Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation present the gallery.
