Ex-boyfriend held in Auburn woman’s death

Police have arrested a 19-year-old Auburn man for investigation of homicide-domestic violence after medics found his former girlfriend slain in her south end apartment early Monday.

According to the Auburn police account filed with court papers, the man called 911 at 3:20 a.m. to report that his 20-year-old ex was having a hard time breathing owing to partying and drinking.

Valley Regional Fire Authority fire and medic units arrived about nine minutes later at the Clearwater Apartments in the 3700 block of Auburn Way South and found the woman lying on her back in the living room in wet and dirty clothes, with scratch marks on her neck, apparent hemorrhaging in her eyes and bloody lips.

Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

According to court papers, Auburn police detectives took note of the woman’s injuries and determined that she had died from homicidal violence.

The man told police at the scene that he and the woman had consumed some Vodka and Red Bull earlier, but he refused to say much else about the evening.

According to court papers, before calling 911 the man had called the woman’s mother and told her that she was not breathing . She told him to call 911.

A neighbor told police that she had heard hollering, yelling and banging earlier that she described as “like wrestling and falling over furniture.”

According to court papers, police found particles of grass or moss in the washer on a black woman’s spaghetti strap shirt and similar debris in the dead woman’s hair.

Police arrested the man at the scene and booked him into the Auburn City jail on suspicion of murder-domestic violence.

In a subsequent interview, the man said that he and the woman had been drinking. He made no mention of any drugs although he told 911 earlier that the woman could have overdosed on methamphetamines. He made no mention of any arguing or fighting and downplayed it when police raised the subject.

According to court papers the woman had earlier confided in her sister that several scars on her face were from blows she had received from the man. The couple had lived together for 2 to three years. Auburn Police Sgt. Scott Near said the woman had apparently moved into the apartment where she died after the couple broke up. Both were Native Americans.

The Auburn Reporter is withholding publication of the woman’s name pending notification of relatives.

The man made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Superior Court in Seattle. He is being held at the Seattle King County Jail on $1 million bail..

“We’ll review the case and decide what charges should be filed,” said King County. Prosecutors Spokesman Dan Donohoe. “We have until Thursday to file charges.”

The King County Medical Examiner performed autopsy on the woman Tuesday morning but has not yet revealed a cause of death.

Detectives and crime scene personnel are continuing their investigation.
