Fiesta Premio Esmeralda celebration comes to Emerald Downs

Emerald Down honors its Latin workers and the Hispanic community on Sunday, July 19 with Fiesta Premio Esmeralda, a full day of racing, entertainment and activities for families.

Emerald Down honors its Latin workers and the Hispanic community on Sunday, July 19 with Fiesta Premio Esmeralda, a full day of racing, entertainment and activities for families.

Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Activities begin at noon. First post is 2 p.m.

The ninth annual Fiesta Premio Esmeralda includes an afternoon of horse races, mariachi music, authentic Mexican food, and a horse show and activities for the children.

Last year’s event attracted more than 12,000 people.

“… Here at Emerald Downs we have a strong relationship with the Latino community, as a huge number of our workers is of Hispanic descent,” said Sophia McKee, the racetrack’s marketing director. “This event has tremendous significance for all of us here at Emerald Downs, so we really go all out to make sure the Latino community has an awesome and culturally relevant experience.

“… It is very important to us that everyone enjoys this event as together we share the love for the horse culture and equestrian sports ….”

The Charros de Washington presents its Mexican Equestrian Show with dancing horses at noon. The show features Martin Morales and his horse, El Mariachi; Don Ramón Mejía and his horse El Peter; and José Gutiérrez (“el 7 Veredas”) and his horse Mil Amores.

“Our horses are taught to dance by following a series of rules and educating them properly,” said one of the show’s organizers. “This year we will be accompanied by the Mariachi Guadalajara from Juan Garcia and the fabulous Banda Vagos.”

In addition, T-shirts commemorating the event will be given away.

Kids can take in free activities. like jumping castles, giant slides, face painting and pony rides, among other activities.

Admission is $7 for adults; 17 and younger are free. Kids younger than 13 should be accompanied by a parent or representative.
