The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 169 calls for service between Jan. 19 and Jan. 25, among them the following:
Jan. 19
Unconscious Man: 5 p.m., (Pacific). A car pulled up to the front of Station 38 with an unconscious, pulse-less man in the passenger seat. The driver had been taking his dad to the doctor when the older man suddenly collapsed in the passenger seat. The driver raced to Station 38 for medical help. The Station 38 crew began CPR on the man and called for additional help. Aid 311, Medic 6, and Battalion 31 worked on the man for an hour, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Several family members arrived at the scene where the VRFA Chaplin did his best to comfort them.
Jan. 20
Vehicle Fire: 9:25 p.m., (Lea Hill). Firefighters responding to a report of a suspicious car fire on the 12600 block of 299th Place Southeast found a full-sized SUV fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters squelched the fire with tank water. The vehicle’s occupants fled on foot, with police and the South King Fire Investigation Task Force hot on their trail to question them.
Jan. 21
School Bus Accident: 8 a.m., (Lakeland Hills). Firefighters responded to the 6200 block of Olive Avenue Southeast and a school bus collision. A full- size school bus, carrying six children, was traveling about five miles per hour down an icy street when the driver momentarily lost control. The rear bumper of the bus hit a street light pole, and the driver immediately stopped the bus. Nobody was hurt. Firefighters helped with traffic control while the children were transferred to a replacement bus. Auburn police investigated the cause of the accident.
Jan. 22
Diabetic: 3:30 p.m., (Auburn) VRFA personnel responded to Wal-Mart and a semi-conscious patient with a blood-sugar level of 50. During the medical evaluation, medics discovered that the patient also had very low blood pressure. The patient did not respond well to the care that was provided in the field and subsequently was transported to Auburn Regional Medical Center (ARMC) for further medical evaluation.
Jan. 23
Fire and Explosions: 7:16 p.m., (Lea Hill). VRFA personnel investigated an illegal outdoor fire with explosions in a field behind a housing division. The fire crew contacted two young men tossing fireworks into a burn-barrel, informed them of the laws they were violating (Stage 2 Burn Ban and Fireworks) and the fines they stood to incur. The young men complied with the order to extinguish the fire. Firefighters told them that any additional complaints would be dealt with to the full extent of the law.
Jan. 24
Suspicious Fire: 1:20 p.m., (Auburn). Engine 32 was dispatched to an apartment complex to investigate the remnants of a small fire found by residents. Although the fire had caused little damage, it was the third fire in the same location since Christmas day. The South King Fire Investigation Task Force are investigating.
Jan. 25
Chest Pain: 10:06 a.m., (Auburn). Units responded to the Family Life Center Church at the 100 block of Lakeland Hills Way S.E. where a 63-year-old woman was reportedly having chest pain. VRFA personnel quickly determined the pain was not cardiac related. Paramedics evaluated the woman and transported her to a hospital for further evaluation.
