Fire & rescue blotter | July 10

Between June 29 and July 5, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 278 calls for service, among them the following:

June 29

Aid call: 11:12 a.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responding to a report of an injured baby found an infant who had fallen from a second-floor balcony onto packed dirt. Firefighters placed the baby onto a specially-designed backboard to stabilize the neck and torso before arranging for American Medical Response to transport the baby to Auburn Regional Medical Center.

June 30

Brush fire: 2:02 p.m., (Auburn). A brush fire broke out near the fireworks stands in the 2300 block of Auburn Way South, apparently from an errant firework that dropped into the brush and started a quick-moving blaze. Stand owners took quick action that limited the fire to a 10’ x 10’ area. Engine 32 arrived to provide water support and mop things up.

July 1

Aid: 10:22 a.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responding to reports of an unconscious, unresponsive man found an elderly man on the ground and his wife performing CPR. Firefighters treated the man under the direction of Medic One, and Medic 6 transported him to Auburn Regional Medical Center.

July 2

CPR: 8:24 p.m., (Auburn). Valley dispatched firefighters to a patient who was not breathing. VRFA firefighters started CPR, and Medic 6 provided advanced life support that restored a heart rhythm. Medic 6 then transported the person to AMRC.

July 3

Brush fire: 1:33 p.m., (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to a brush fire at 1008 37th Street S.E. When firefighters arrived they found a rapidly spreading brush fire approximately 60’ x 100’ in size. Firefighters deployed lines to protect the apartments to the north and south and soon halted the progression of the fire. Investigators believe a discharged firework started the conflagration.

July 4

Child CPR: 11:59 a.m., (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to a choking child. Shortly after the initial dispatch Valley Com upgraded the call to a CPR when firefighters learned the child was unconscious. Aid 31 got there first and started CPR. Shortly after, Medic 6 and additional crews arrived and started advanced life support efforts. The father explained the child had choked while eating a peach. After several minutes VRFA crews got a heartbeat back and the child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

July 5

Motor vehicle accident: 7:45 a.m., (Pacific). Valley Com dispatched Engine 38 and Aid 32 to a vehicle off of the roadway. Arriving on location, firefighters located the car 100 feet off of the highway. The patient, gender not given, was extricated from the vehicle and transported by the VRFA to ARMC for further treatment.
