Lakeland Hills’ Leaf earns grant for gardening project | School district briefs

Lakeland Hills Elementary School librarian Vickie Leaf has been awarded a $2,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant. The grant will fund a gardening project that teaches students about soil management, water conservation, cultivation of decorative plants, as well as what it takes to grow food and how to sustain it.

Terminal Park Elementary School is accepting nominations for the district STEP program (elementary gifted education) for the 2010-2011 school year. Nominated students are selected based on testing results from the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP), a cognitive abilities test and a characteristic rating scale. The STEP program seeks to support advanced learners through deep exploration of content areas and the use of higher level thinking skills. Auburn Riverside High School’s School-Based Enterprise achieved Gold Level Certification and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Ky., on April 24-27. Students Jaclyn Akers and Brianna Hurn, with the assistance of their advisor, Chris Wilson, led the recertification effort. The school store at Auburn Riverside High School has operated an SBE for 12 consecutive years. …

Auburn Riverside captured excellent and superior ratings and qualified more band students than any other school in the region for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Central Washington University in April. Students will perform for three professional musicians who are experts and specialists on their individual instruments. The following students received “excellent ratings” for their solos: Jeff Miles (trombone); Sumner Brock (saxophone); Riley Schulz (clarinet); Hunter Logan (clarinet); Kristina Brockett (saxophone); Kari Chicketti (tuba); Caleb Thompson (marimba); David Berry (timpani); Jessica Fletcher (flute); Gerik Dobes (trumpet). The following students received “superior” ratings for their solos and qualified for state: Aaryn Snyder (baritone); Brandon Hand (baritone); Katherine Nash (French horn); Sebastian Hernandez (trumpet); Elise Jones (saxophone); Karley Thurston (saxophone); Dustin Brown (trombone); Austin Bastrom (oboe). The following ensembles received “excellent” ratings: woodwind Quintet; flute duet; clarinet/flute duet; percussion quartet 1; percussion quartet 2; small percussion ensemble; mallet duet; percussion quintet. The following ensemble received a “superior” rating: saxophone quartet. The following ensembles received “superior” ratings and qualified for state: large percussion ensemble, brass quintet, horn quartet, trombone quartet.
