PREP FOOTBALL: Auburn Riverside, Auburn Mountainview open season with wins

The Auburn Riverside football team opened its South Puget Sound League 4A North season Friday with a 30-29 overtime win over Kent-Meridian at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

The Ravens scored first with junior quarterback John Hakala finding Ryan Adams in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown.

The Ravens went up 14-0 when Hakala again found Cameron Grad in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown.

Kent-Meridian put its first numbers on the scoreboard with 1 minute, 10 seconds left in the first quarter, when B.J. Arceneaux galloped 65 yards for a touchdown.

Kent-Meridian erupted in the second quarter, with David Jones running in from 81 yards out for a touchdown, and Eddie Zhao kicking a 25-yard touchdown to close out the first half.

The Royals sought to extend their 16-14 lead in the second half with Arceneaux again finding the end zone, this time from 84 yards out. The Ravens blocked the point after, leaving the score 22-14 with 5:24 left in the third quarter.

Auburn Riverside tied the game up with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, running the ball in for a touchdown from 19 yards out. Hakala converted the two-point conversion, leaving the score tied at 22-22.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, setting up the overtime.

Kent-Meridian scored first, with Arceneaux notching a 15-yard rushing touchdown, his third of the game.

The Ravens responded with an 8-yard touchdown run by Bjornstad and won the game 30-29 with the ensuing two-point conversion run by Grad.

Auburn Riverside finished the game with 87 yards rushing on 30 attempts. The Ravens completed 13 of 30 pass attempts for 197 yards in the air.

Bjornstad led the team with 73 yards rushing on 14 attempts with two touchdowns.

Hakala was 13 of 30 in the air with an interception and two touchdowns.

Grad led the team with 106 all-purpose yards, seven on the ground and 99 receiving.

Defensively, Mitch Youngs led the Ravens with 10 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Tyler Standish had 7.5 tackles and Kell Garrison chipped in with 6 tackles and two forced fumbles.

The Royals scorched the Ravens for 487 yards of total offense, including 405 on the ground.

The Ravens will host Tahoma (1-0) at 7 p.m. this Friday at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

Auburn Mountainview 23, Clover Park 0 Auburn Mountainview opened South Puget Sound League 3A division play this past Friday with a 23-0 win over Clover Park at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood. The Lions were led by senior running back Vince Wagner who notched 133 yards on the ground on 27 attempts. Wagner also added a 20-yard touchdown run. Senior quarterback Cody McNeil was 8 of 17 for 86 yards and two touchdowns. McNeil added 80 yards rushing on nine attempts. Senior Tate Newell had five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown and junior Darrell Robinson had one receiving touchdown.

Defensively, Newell and Robinson both recorded interceptions and McNeil led the team with six tackles. Sophomore E.J. Barrasco and junior Jeremy Perkovich each added sacks for the Lions.

As a team Auburn Mountainview held the Cardinals to just 118 yards of total offense and seven first downs.

The Lions will host Bonney Lake (0-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

ALSO:The Kentwood Conquerors mounted a last minute comeback to beat Central Kitsap 39-27 in non-league play last Thursday. Senior linebacker Zach Corpuz scooped up a Central Kitsap fumble and ran it in from 26 yards out for a touchdown to put away the Cougars. Senior quarterback Tristen Askew had two rushing touchdowns and threw for another. Kentwood will host No. 4 ranked Auburn (1-0) at 7 p.m. this Friday at French Field… The Kentridge Chargers put a 34-7 beating on Kentlake this past Friday at French Field. The Chargers scored 21 points in the first quarter and cruised to the SPSL 4A North win over their district rival. Alex Tyson had two rushing touchdowns for the Chargers. Kentridge will travel to Federal Way Memorial Stadium to take on Jefferson (0-1) at 7 p.m. this Friday. Kentlake will play an away game against Kent-Meridian (0-1) at 7 p.m this Thursday at French Field… Niko Madison led Tahoma with two rushing touchdowns in the Bears’ 26-6 win over Jefferson this past Friday at Tahoma Stadium. The Bears will travel to Auburn Memorial Stadium to take on Auburn Riverside (1-0) at 7 p.m. this Friday.
