With just a couple weeks before the Washington Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether Pacific voters will see a recall of controversial Mayor Cy Sun on a ballot this summer, opponents of the mayor hosted a yard sale last weekend to raise money to pay for their ongoing legal battle.
According to Don Thomson, president of the Committee to Recall Cy Sun and Protect Pacific Votes, the event made a dent in the $10,000 needed to pay their lawyers in the ongoing legal drama.
“It’s been fantastic. I can’t say enough for the volunteers and the people of Pacific who have stepped forward,” Thomson said. “All of this stuff was donated by the people of Pacific. All the sales have been donations. I set a personal goal and we broke it.”
Thomson said the committee raised more than $2,000 on the first two days of the yard sale.
The state’s High Court is expected to rule April 4 on Sun’s appeal of a lower court decision to put the recall in front of Pacific voters.
“There are no more appeals or delays left,” Thomson said. “Once that’s decided, and it should be in our favor, then we can go out and get the signatures. Thirty to 45 days after the signatures have been verified, we can have it on a special ballot. Then it’s up to the voters. And judging from the support that we have received, it’s going to happen. I feel confident that we’re going to win. His scorecard in court has not been good. Ours has. There is going to be a recall.”
The recall was previously given the green light by a King County Superior Court judge, who ruled there was sufficiency to recall Sun. Through his lawyer, Tyler Firkins, however, Sun appealed the decision to the higher court.
For Thomson, it’s about more than just recalling the mayor.
“It’s something that the voters have to wake up and realize – their votes are important,” Thomson said. “Know what you’re voting for. If you have questions, ask them. If you have doubts, investigate them. Because this is a prime example of people not paying attention. And when you take a 109-year-old town that is financially stable and destroy it in a little over a year, that’s horrendous.”
