Tuesday’s windstorm has disrupted and blocked roadways, cut power to many parts of Auburn and closed schools.

An estimated 39,000 people throughout South King County and North Pierce County remained without power as of 2:30 p.m. today, according to Puget Sound Energy. There are more than 400 outages in South King County, PSE said.

As of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews had restored power to more than 169,000 PSE customers, a number of which includes customers who many have lost power more than once, the utility said.

The highest number of customers without power at any given point was about 60,000.

PSE has seven crews dispatched to Auburn to restore service as quickly as possible. PSE estimates it may be as late as Friday before all power will be restored in Auburn due to a large circuit outage.

All schools in the Auburn, Kent, Enumclaw and Tahoma districts, and the Muckleshoot Tribal schools, and five schools in Federal Way were closed without power. Dozens others were delayed.

Fallen trees had blocked Highways 164, 161 and 169.

A wind advisory remains in effect for the Cascade foothills until late Thursday morning.

The following roads remain closed due to downed trees and power lines:

• West Valley Highway S. 800-1500 block

• Oravetz Road from Mill Pond Drive SE to Kersey Way SE

• Kersey Way SE from 37th Street SE to 53rd Street SE/Evergreen Way

• Auburn Way South at Academy Drive

Be safe

PSE encourages customers without power to be prepared for their safety and comfort. If using portable heaters, keep them away from furniture, draperies and other flammable materials. Never use a natural gas range for heating or charcoal as an indoor heating or cooking source.

Comcast is estimating that there are approximately about 27,000 customers without service, almost all because power is out, heavily focused in the area immediately around the Auburn field office and radiating into Pierce County. Comcast is posting its latest information on their blog site: wacomcast.com.

Comcast is working alongside PSE to restore service to Auburn customers.

Warming centers and shelters

The following will be in place today:

• Warming center: Auburn Senior Activity Center: 808 Ninth St. SE, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• Warming center: Auburn City Hall: 25 W. Main St., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Overnight severe weather shelter: Les Gove Multipurpose Building: 1024 Deals Way (between the Auburn Senior Activity Center and Auburn Library) – 8 p.m.-7 a.m.

• The Auburn Food Bank (930 18th Place NE) has power and will be open for food service today from 4:30-6 p.m. and the second Wednesday evening food bank will be open as normally scheduled.
