That is the message Auburn School District Child Nutrition Director Carol Barker wants parents to get about the free summer lunch program.

The program begins Tuesday and continues on weekdays through Aug. 19 at 35 different locations in school district service areas. Lunch is served at different times at these places.

Barker said those sites were selected because they have the highest levels of students on free- and reduced-price lunch in the district. She expects 1,500 to 1,800 lunches to be served daily at each site.

But that does not mean the lunch portion of the program is limited to low-income students. Barker said anyone 1 to 18 years old is eligible to receive lunch. The program is federally funded.

“We don’t have a formula program, so we don’t serve babies,” she said.

Barker said the district served 70,000 lunches last year.

Through community partnerships, Barker said, there will be activities at the parks and apartment complexes that serve lunches. Activities, Barker said, include parachute games, kickball, bingo, fruit and vegetable education, among others.

Barker said there is no registration requirement to receive lunch, which offers fresh fruits and vegetables, nonfat milk and a variety of hot and cold entrees, or participate in the activities.
