Semi-truck driver caught in floodwaters | Fire blotter

From the Valley Regional Fire Authority.

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to the following calls for service between Dec. 15 and Dec. 22, among many others.

Dec. 15

Vehicle vs. pedestrian: (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a person who’d been struck by a vehicle while he was working to mitigate flood damage, and then a private ambulance transported him to a local emergency department for further evaluation.

Dec. 16

Aid call: 10:25 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a man in crisis who was trying to jump from the R Street Bridge over the White River before a private ambulance transported him to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further care.

Aid call: 12:46 p.m. (Auburn). After firefighters had provided emergency care to a child who was in respiratory distress, and King County Medic One paramedics administered advanced life support, Airlift Northwest flew the child to MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. Because of heavy traffic from area flooding, the Auburn Police Department cleared the route for the paramedics to get to the airport.

Accident: 7:34 a.m. (Auburn). The driver of a semi-truck who’d driven around a road closure sign to avoid floodwaters ended up tipped at a 45-degree angle in about two feet of water. River rescue personnel helped the driver to dry land. Dispatchers could not find a tow company to recover the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Dec. 17

Wires down: 8:26 a.m. (Lea Hill). Firefighters responded to reports of a power line down near the 29400 block of 112th Avenue SE. They arrived to find the line blocking both directions of traffic, so they closed the northbound and southbound lanes to ensure public safety. Firefighters then called Puget Sound Energy and stayed on scene until PSE resolved the problem.

Dec. 19

Commercial fire: 12:35 a.m. (Pacific). Firefighters were en route to deal with an automatic fire alarm in an apartment building when dispatch upgraded the call to a commercial fire. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a ground-floor apartment as workers helping with nearby levee repairs informed them. Crews entered the unit, quickly extinguished the fire, and confirmed there were no occupants, as the building had been evacuated because of flooding. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dec. 20

Car vs. pedestrian: 10:58 a.m. (Lakeland Hills). Once firefighters who’d responded to a report of a child struck by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle determined that the injury was minor, so they left him in his mother’s care.

Dec. 21

Aid call: 7:06 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a man with swelling in his legs, and then a private ambulance scooted him to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further care.
