Several Lea Hill Elementary preschool and kindergarten students had an opportunity to spread their wings and learn a little about what it takes to be a pilot at Auburn’s Northwest Aviation College last Friday.

Students from Kym Nelson’s integrated class, ranging in age from 3-5 years old, got a taste of a pilot’s world, with experienced instructors and pilots on hand to teach the children about airport operations and the types of aircraft found at an airport. Each student learned a little about tarmac etiquette and safety, followed by an opportunity to climb into an airplane’s cockpit and learn, through touch and play, the aircraft’s controls.

“They loved it,” Nelson said. “One Friday a month we go out into the community to teach them about different things. This time we were teaching them about transportation. Airplanes were a favorite, so we decided to go to the airport. The best part for them was being able to climb into a plane.”
