Auburn Mountainview girls still alive in districts, will face White River on Wednesday | Girls Basketball

The Auburn Mountainview girls basketball team advanced to round two of the West Central/Southwest District 3A Girls Basketball Tournament with a 53-47 win over Timberline this past Saturday.

The Lions trailed 36-31 at the end of the third quarter, but mounted a 22-point fourth quarter to come back and win the game.

All-South Puget Sound League 3A first-team selections Stephanie Smolinski and Caitlin Carr led the way for Auburn Mountainview with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Senior Angel Pele, a second-team all-SPSL 3A pick, had 11 points.

The win pushes Auburn Mountainview into the second round of the tourney where they will face a familiar foe, White River, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Park High School in Lakewood.

Twice this season the Lions (15-7 overall) have faced White River (17-5), falling both times to the Hornets – 44-43 on Dec. 11 and 47-44 on Jan. 12.

SPSL 3A co-MVP Brooke Paulson provided the sting for the Hornets in both contests, scoring 22 points in December and 23 points in January.

The Lions were without the services of Smolinski, who injured her hand early in the season, in both previous contests.

The winner of the loser-out game will play either Capital or Union at 6 p.m. this Friday at Clover Park.
