Auburn Mountainview moves 11 wrestlers on to district tourney

So much for being a young program.

Auburn Mountainview looked like anything but a bunch of youngsters on Saturday at the sub-regional wrestling tournament held at Auburn Mountainview High.

The Lions not only hung with some of the state’s top teams in Enumclaw and White River, but also managed to advance 11 wrestlers to Saturday’s Region II tournament at Bonney Lake High School.

“We thought we did pretty well,” said coach Adam France. “We’re still building our program and don’t quite have the depth yet, but we felt good with our performance overall.”

The Lions brought 19 wrestlers into the tournament.

Top-ranked Enumclaw ran away with the team title, ripping off 429.5 points followed by White River (264.5). Not far behind White River was Auburn Mountainview, which bagged an impressive third-place team finish with 259.5 points.

The top four finishers in each weight class punched their tickets to Saturday’s regional tournament. The top four wrestlers in each weight class tomorrow advance to state, which is slated for Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome.

Leading the way to regionals for Auburn Mountainview will be Matt Anderson (112 pounds) and Tyler King (135). Both grabbed titles at the sub-regional tournament. Anderson outlasted Enumclaw’s Marcus Nickols, 8-7. He came into the match having lost to Nickols by first-period pins twice already this season.

“He stepped up his game a ton,” France said

Meanwhile, King delivered one of the championship round’s most dominating performances, working over Franklin Pierce’s Erik Booth to a 10-2 major decision.

Other regional qualifiers from Auburn Mountainview include: Brandon Perry (second at 103); Jericho Urmenita (third at 125); T.J. Peretti (fourth at 130); Cody Mangan (third at 135); Isaac Tadeo (second at 152); Lucas Huyber (fourth at 152); Patrick Peterson (fourth at 160); Luke Peterson (second at 171) and Kristian Agemotu (third at 215).
