After trailing 9-7 in the first quarter, Auburn Mountainview scored 31 straight points to roar past Glacier Peak 45-22 in a 3A quad-district playoff, the football program’s first postseason win.

The Lions (9-1) advance to play at Shadle Park (7-3) of Spokane in a first-round state playoff Saturday.

“It feels pretty good, it feels awesome,” coach Jared Gervais said.

“We talked about it. We always try to make history, that’s kind of our motto,” junior quarterback Gresch Jensen added. “So it feels real good to get out here and get the win.”

After the Grizzlies (6-4) took the lead in the first quarter, Jensen and the Lions responded with the next four scores.

Jensen found senior Gavin Robertson in the end zone from 12 yards out to close out the quarter. In the second quarter, Jensen found junior Ryan Lacey for a 5-yard TD and Robertson again for a 26-yard touchdown.

Nate Hardin added a 9-yard TD run in the third quarter, and kicker Devon Tandberg made the score 38-9 with a 30-yard field goal.

Jensen put a bow on the win with a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve seen them play twice in person, so we were kind of ready for them,” Gervais said. “We weren’t quite expecting what they did defensively though, so we took a little more advantage by throwing down the field a little more. We thought we could throw the ball and score some points that way. And we shut them down defensively. They’re a pretty good team. It was fun to throw the ball around a little after a year of not doing it as much.”

Jensen finished the game with 24-of-45 passing for 317 yards and four TDs. He also had eight rushes for 21 yards and TD.

Robertson had nine catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns and Lacey had three receptions for 29 yards and a TD.

Nate Hardin had a team-high 39 yards on eight carries.

“Scoring drive after drive in the first half made the difference,” Gervais said. “The special teams are getting better, the offensive did good and the defense came up big a couple plays and shut them down all game. All around it was a great team effort.”

Senior Jason Sele led the way defensively with 11 tackles, with senior Aeron Watson adding nine. Watson also had a fumble recovery, as did junior Chippa Ulugalu-Sula. Senior Abenego Kondiano had two interceptions and junior Corey Barnes added one pick.

“Our plan on defense was just to go out there and read out keys, not really change anything,” Robertson said. “On offense we just planed to hit them on bubble (screens) underneath and then go over the top on them after they came down.”

Jensen said that despite finding themselves in an early hole, he was confident of his team’s ability to pull it out.

“We’re always confident and expect the win,” Jensen said. “They’re very disciplined team, but we came in and executed our game plan. We just came in, did our stuff and didn’t do anything special.”
