Just minutes after her record-setting championship win in the 140-pound girls division at Mat Classic XXIII, Katrynia Todd was abuzz with excitement.

Although the Auburn junior had just made school history by becoming the first female wrestler to win a state title, Todd was more excited about her teammate, Siao Wilson’s third-place finish in the heavyweight division.

“It’s amazing,” Todd said. “The thing I’m happiest about is that we’re on the board with two girls. Watching her was amazing, to take third place in just her first year was great.”

“She (Todd) kind of pushed me to it,” Wilson said. “I honestly did not like wrestling, but now that I’m here … third. Come on, you can’t beat that.”

For Todd, who began wrestling in the sixth grade, the road to the title was a tough one.

After beating her first two opponents by pin, Todd found herself matched up with the only girl to have beaten her this year, Sedro Woolley’s Haylee Rabenstein.

This time, Todd narrowly defeated her rival, 2-1, in four overtime periods.

“I lost one time this year, by one point in overtime, and got to come back in and beat her this time in four overtimes,” Todd said. “It feels great, I have to thank my coaches for that one.”

In the championship match, Todd defeated Lincoln senior Imari Jones 6-4.

The Auburn girls finished 16th with 17 points. Sedro Woolley was first with 79 points.

ALSO: Auburn Mountainview’s Alyssa Aguilar finished seventh in the 103-pound division. Aguilar defeated Warden’s Deianeira Caudle 5-0 in the seventh-place match to earn her first state placing. Last season Aquilar competed but did not place at Mat Classic.
