Lions bow out of state tourney with quarterfinal loss to Franklin 58-38

The Auburn Mountainview girls basketball squad’s Washington State 3A championship tourney run ended on Thursday morning with a 58-38 defeat to Franklin in the quarterfinals.

The Lions found themselves in a 14-6 first quarter hole and were unable to dig themselves out, despite pulling to within seven points in the third quarter.

Junior Stephanie Smolinski led Auburn Mountainview with eight points, seven rebounds and two steals. Freshman Aalia Braboy had seven points and Ida Hüners added six points and eight rebounds.

The Lions, forced into the consolation bracket by a first round defeat to Meadowdale on Wednesday, struggled against the Quaker’s full court press and turned the ball over 27 times in the contest

Franklin was paced by Carol Howard’s game-high 14 points. Howard also had three three-pointers and six rebounds. Kayla Williams and Amy Hirai had 13 points apiece.

The Lions finish the season with a 17-10 overall record. The team will lose three seniors – Tasha Al-Nakib, Lizzy Harrison and Lyudmila Forostyanaya. Also gone will be junior Hüners, an exchange student who will return to Germany after the school year.
