Majestics need win Saturday for better playoff positioning

It’s coming down to the wire for the Seattle Majestics.

The Majestics might be undefeated (5-0), but under the Independent Women’s Football League’s rating system, the Kent-based program is sitting fourth in the Western Conference race.

That’s good enough to ensure a berth for playoffs this summer, but if the Majestics want to bring some of that postseason action to Kent, they’re going to need a win. A big win. A loss by top-ranked Los Angeles to Sacramento on June 13 wouldn’t hurt, either.

“We need to be ranked at one or two,” said Camille Head, a co-owner of the team, who also plays wide receiver and defensive back.

That’s why this Saturday the Majestics will be playing for keeps at Kent’s French Field, against the Portland Shock Wave. If they can clinch this game (they’ve beaten them three times now) it will bring the Majestics one step closer to giving Kent its first IWFL playoff game.

“We still have two games to play, and we’ll see what comes out of it,” Head said, noting that after Portland on Saturday, they’ll play their last regular-season game June 13 at Tucson versus the Monsoon.

It all comes down to two games and a hoped-for stumble by Los Angeles.

“We’ll see what comes out of it,” Head said.

And, she added, of the attraction for area folks, the weather is supposed to be great, and the league, which isn’t about salaries or endorsements, is about athletes playing hard for the love of the sport.

“Of course we play harder,” Head said, when asked if the Majestics play as hard as the guys. “We play with more heart.”
