A Pacific Police officer shot a man trying to steal his patrol car Thursday night.

Medics transported the suspect, a 41-year-old Quilcene resident, to Harborview in Seattle in critical condition. He is expected to survive. The officer, a 6-year veteran of the Pacific Police Department was not hurt.

According to King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West, the officer attempted to pull over a 41-year-old man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle at about 10:40 p.m.

The suspect eluded the officer, leading him through a residential area on a vehicle pursuit that ended in a driveway in the 200 block of Sunset Drive.

After stopping the truck, which had been stolen Wednesday in Port Townsend, the man got out and tried to run off. The officer, then directly behind the truck, exited his car and chased the man, West said.

After circling the house, the man jumped into the still-running patrol car and tried to drive away. After trying without success to stop the man, the officer hit him with multiple shots.

During the incident, the police car crashed into a Hummer in the driveway of a house across the street, pushing it into the garage door and part way into the garage.

According to West, the King County Sheriff’s Office’s Critical Response Team was at the scene as of Friday morning, investigating the shooting. The King County Investigative Response Team (K.C.I.R.T.) was also investigating.
