A resourceful donation drive at Grace Community Church produced 50 “touch-of-home” care packages to be shipped off to military personnel overseas in time for the men and women to enjoy during the holiday season.

“We got to thinking, ‘We need to do something for our soldiers,’” said Lois Anke, the church’s receptionist. “The congregation was absolutely amazing in getting the donations.”

Anke’s son, Jeff, has been in the Air Force for eight years and is serving his second tour of duty in the Afghanistan region. Each gift box is different and includes sports and personal items, food and beverages, puzzle books, mini fans and batteries, small musical instruments and card games, blankets and handmade crafts.

Volunteers Cynthia Hickock, Rita Hudson, Donna Castle, Carolyn Wyant and Jenet Harold led the volunteer effort.

More donations are being taken to ship more gift boxes overseas. To contribute, please call the church office during regular business hours at 253-833-5660.
