King County Assessor John Wilson joined King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer for recent town-hall meetings on property taxes in Auburn and Federal Way.
Among the issues discussed was property tax affordability for seniors, disabled individuals and disabled veterans. Many seniors were concerned about the increasing difficultness to pay for rising property taxes. They were concerned about upcoming levies including the proposed taxes for Sound Transit 3.
“If you are over the age of 61, have a household income of $40,000 a year or less and are the owner occupant of your home, you may qualify for a senior property tax exemption,” Wilson explained.
“I don’t want seniors to be taxed out of their homes and I am becoming increasingly concerned on our reliance on the property tax. I believe we are making it difficult for seniors to stay in their homes and for young folks to achieve the dream of home ownership,” Wilson continued.
For question about their property taxes, residents should call the Assessor’s office at 206-296-7300. They may also call the King County Tax Advisor at 206-477-1061.
