Fire & rescue blotter | June 5

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 183 calls for service between May 25 and June 1, among them the following:

May 25

Service aid: 5:26 p.m., (Pacific). Firefighters responded to a service call at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Thornton Avenue Southwest and found a dog that had gotten its front right leg caught in the inside door handle of its owner’s Suburban. Firefighters poured liquid dish soap on the leg and manipulated it until the dog was freed. After the incident, firefighters gave the dog a quick bath using tank water to remove the liquid dish soap. The dog did not appear to be injured.

May 26

Service call: 10:10 a.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responded to a report of a power line down at the 500 block of F Street Southeast. On arrival, they found that a delivery truck in a construction zone had ripped down a power line. Firefighters notified Puget Sound Energy, and an Auburn Traffic Enforcement officer secured the area until PSE arrived.

May 26

Aid call: 4:23 p.m., (Pacific). Firefighters responded to two reported burn patients. Upon arrival, crews found a young man and a woman with burns from a cooking accident. Firefighters treated both patients and an ambulance transported them to Harborview Medical Center.

May 27

Aid call: 8:30 a.m., (Auburn). VRFA personnel and King County Medic 6 responded to a report of an unconscious, non breathing patient. Valley Communications Center dispatchers instructed the family by telephone to begin CPR while awaiting the arrival of VRFA units. Engine and Aid 31 arrived and took over resuscitation efforts, while Medic 6 provided advanced life support procedures. The patient did not respond to resuscitation efforts.

May 28

Aid call: 9:08 a.m., (Lea Hill). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to an aid call at Hazelwood Elementary school. Finding a girl who had fainted during a gym class, firefighters provided basic life support and checked the girl for injuries. She was determined to be stable and her mother transported her to a private physician for further evaluation.

May 29

Brush fire: 7:03 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responding to a large brush fire east of the 1200 block of “M” Street Southeast and found a 2 ½ acre brush fire on a steep hillside in the gravel pit just south of the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation. Firefighters snuffed the fire using hand tools. Investigation showed that fireworks were to blame.

May 30

Aid call: 5:15 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responded to a person with a decreased level of consciousness. Firefighters tested the patient’s blood sugar, found it to be low, and provided treatment on-scene. After several minutes, the patient’s level of consciousness returned to normal and he or she was left with family members to provide continued care.

May 31

Anxiety: 6:25 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters responding to the 4100 block of A Street Southeast found a woman experiencing what appeared to be an anxiety attack while riding on a Metro bus. Firefighters helped the woman with her asthma medicine. Once taken, it had a dramatic effect on her condition. The woman declined a ride to the hospital and walked home.
