Emergency officials in the Auburn area said the driver of a pickup truck that went off the roadway and into a creek upside down was rescued by five Good Samaritans, the King County Sheriff’s reported.

When they couldn’t open the doors or break the glass to free the unconscious man, they did the next best thing. They rolled the truck upright. The truck was a 1983 Ford F-100.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon about 4:15 in unincorporated King County, south of Covington.

The 28-year-old driver from Montesano was northbound on 192nd Ave SE. He struck a guardrail in the 33000 block, then the vehicle climbed the guardrail and went into Covington Creek and landed on its top in two to three feet of running water.

A witness flagged down four other people, all of whom waded into the creek. When they could not rescue the man any other way, they were able to upright the truck back onto its wheels.

The driver was unconscious from a serious head injury and his seatbelt was choking him. One of the rescuers cut the seatbelt with a knife.

The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

At this point, investigators don’t know why the truck veered off the roadway.
