A Superior Court Judge last week sentenced a 23-year-old Kent man to 25 years in prison for firing into the Pacific community center and killing 21-year-old Shiloh Drott on Nov. 14, 2008.

Sopheatheara Kim had previously entered an Alford plea, which means that while not admitting guilt, he agreed that if the case were to proceed to trial, a jury would likely find him guilty of first-degree murder.

Judge Laura Inveen gave Kim the sentence prosecutors and Kim had agreed on when they worked out the plea agreement.

According to court records, Kim fired at least eight bullets into the center just before 9 p.m., when young adults were attending a church event sponsored by the Valley Bible Church. Drott died at the scene. According to court records, Kim’s determination to shoot two men who’m he felt had disrespected him earlier was the motivation for the shooting.

A man who was with Kim that night told police he and Kim had been walking into a nearby convenience store when they passed two other men. Kim grew furious when one of the men stared at him, sure that the man was “mean mugging” him. Kim followed the men to the center and stood near a window, according to court records. He fired, then hopped into a car and escaped.

Kim told the court that he regrets the incident.

“I’m sorry for the loss,” he said. I truly apologize for what happened.”
