The King County Council today unanimously approved its 2014 operating and capital budget.

The budget includes a $718 million general fund budget, of which 73 percent is directed toward public safety and criminal justice programs. The budget also preserves King County’s AAA bond rating by not using the County’s cash reserves or tapping the rainy day fund.

King County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer said that he was “happy that Auburn would benefit from this budget.” He pointed out in particular that the county, through its Youth Sports Facilities Grant (YSFG) program, was able to award $61,500 to Pioneer Elementary School in Auburn to help construct a new playground. Using funds from the car rental tax, the YSFG program provides matching grant funds to develop or renovate sports fields that benefit youth in King County.

“I am excited for the youth of Auburn and look forward to their enjoyment of this new playground for years to come,” von Reichbauer said. “With a limited number of funds available, the grant process was very competitive, so it is a testament to our community that a facility right here in Auburn was able to receive this award.”

After passing out of the budget committee last week, the 2014 budget was approved by the full council today and will now be sent to County Executive Dow Constantine for his signature.
