Pacific volunteers go on a record-breaking cleanup spree

Volunteers in Pacific pulled up their sleeves and went to work Saturday.

In one concentrated morning effort, teams collected a record 1,843.8 pounds of trash from various sites around the 3.8-square-mile city – from small “pocket parks” to the Interurban Trail.

“It was pretty awesome,” said Leanne Guier, a volunteer who is representing the Pacific Centennial effort this year. “Seeing the volunteer community coming together for one event is pretty exciting. We all came together because we all care about our little town.”

The total poundage more than doubled last year’s mark gathered by a dozen volunteers. This time around, 39 volunteers came out to participate in the second annual Pacific Parks Pickup, Trash Toss, Weed Wack and Ivy Pull – a community-wide cleanup effort in celebration of Earth Day.

Five Lower White River Valley community groups – Pacific Partnerships, Friends of the Lower White River, the White River Valley Lions Club, the Pacific Meadows Homeowners Association, and Pacific-Algona Scout Troop 835 – teamed up with the Pacific Board of Park directors and the City of Pacific in the efforts.

Guier helped lead the way. Her team collected an event-winning 640.41 pounds of debris found along the Pacific Meadows Trail.

“I even came across a microwave, dated 1976, perhaps one of the first ones,” she said.

Neighbors and friends met at the Pacific-Algona Community Senior Center, then organized into teams and dispersed to collect garbage at several spots, including

City Park, West Hill Passive Park, the Pacific Meadows Wetlands restoration area and the Interurban Trail.

Crews also removed invasive English ivy in a nature park, and weeded the Pacific Meadows Wetlands restoration planting area.

After a trash tally, volunteers were treated to lunch at the center.
