Paving company weathers long rezoning process

Jon Cheetham described what it took to shepherd his request for the rezoning of four parcels from its starting point more than a year ago to final decision before the Auburn City Council on Monday evening.

That is, his request for the rezoning of two parcels totaling 3.65 acres from a light commercial to a light industrial designation, and a rezoning of two parcels totaling 2.22 acres from a heavy commercial to a light industrial designation along Lake Tapps Parkway.

“It’s been a long, hard process of getting our zoning to where we would like it to be,” said the Auburn native and Snag Island Drive resident.

Cheetham, a managing member of the Lakeridge Paving Company, described his plans for those parcels.

“Our intent is to try to put our corporate headquarters down there and beautify the location to make a benefit for the entrance to the city of Auburn. … We have been in business almost 50 years in the area, and we take pride in our company, and we want to put a corporate headquarters down there that the City would be proud of.”

Cheetham began by working with City staff to prepare an amendment to the Auburn’s comprehensive plan.

Got that.

From there, he was on to a public hearing before the Auburn Planning Commission, whose members listened and recommended approval by the City’s hearing examiner.

And the hearing examiner recommended approval by the City Council.

Got that Monday night, unanimously.

“I think this will be a great addition to the city of Auburn,” said Councilman John Holman.

Now Cheetham moves onto the stage that sees planning, design and finally construction of an actual project.

In other action, the council approved:

• Romart Investment LLC’s request for a rezoning of one parcel totaling 2.27 acres at the northeast corner of 182nd Avenue East and Lake Tapps Parkway East from residential to light commercial.

• And a request by the City’s Department of Community Development and Public Works for the rezoning of three parcels totaling 137.38 acres west of C Street Southwest and alongside the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks from light and heavy industrial to heavy commercial, to amend the comprehensive plan and zoning map.
