Retired Metro van gets new life helping people recover from homelessness

King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer recently handed over the keys of a retired Metro van to Dawn Cherne, Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation housing director.

“Valley Cities works hard to make every dollar count in order to improve the quality of life for our region’s residents,” von Reichbauer said. “I know this van will have a fulfilling retirement transporting those who need it the most.”

The donated van will be used to transport people in Valley Cities’ Supportive Housing Program.

“Folks need to get to the food bank, doctor’s appointments and other activities to rebuild their lives and recover from homelessness,” said Trent Allen, Valley Cities Housing manager.

Valley Cities is a community behavioral health center established by the people of South King County in 1965. Today, it operates comprehensive outpatient clinics in Auburn, Federal Way, Kent and Renton.

Valley Cities began outreach to homeless families in 2002 and now provides case management services to more than 125 families in South King County. There currently are more than 170 individuals and families on Valley Cities’ housing wait list.

“We deeply appreciate the van donation,” said Faith Richie, Valley Cities CEO. “This van will provide tangible support to many in need.”
