Trojan gymnastics squad looks to veterans, newcomers to key team | GYMNASTICS

There is a buzz of excitement in the air around the Auburn gymnastics team this season, according to coach Kristie Wilson.

Wilson, who takes over the helm after years as an assistant coach, said the Trojans should have the stuff to compete in the South Puget Sound League North 4A with an arrival of freshman talent augmenting the team’s returning core.

“It’s been years since we’ve had a handful of talented girls,” Wilson said. “It’s been a really new experience and fun so far. There are a lot of fresh faces, and it’s always fun to help and mold them.”

The Trojans again will look to senior Alexis Moore to set the tempo. Last season Moore competed in the state 4A meet, placing 27th and 29th on the floor and beam, respectively.

In addition to Moore, Auburn returns senior Tyler Gardner and sophomore Michaela Zerr.

Joining the team’s veterans will be freshman Ashley Bechard and Bailie Davis.

“Ashley is motivated and competitive,” Wilson said. “She definitely works hard to get that competitive edge going. She’s really poised for a gymnast.”

Wilson said she’ll look for Bechard to shine on the floor exercise and the beam.

“Bailie is a powerful tumbler,” Wilson said.

Wilson said that once Davis has a little seasoning at the high school meets, she expects her to blossom.

“She’s a great gymnast already,” she said.

Wilson said the combination of her veterans, coupled with the influx of talent, should lead to a successful season.

“We’re surprisingly well rounded this season,” Wilson said. “I think those two girls (Davis and Bechard) will really boost our team. And Alexis has always been a powerhouse for us.”
