No. 14 Auburn puts away Skyview, advances to state quarterfinals

The Auburn Trojans stayed alive in the state 4A football playoffs with a 28-21 win over 10th-ranked Skyview last Friday at the Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver.

The Trojans (9-2) advance to the quarterfinals for a home game and rematch against No. 2 Curtis (11-0). Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

Curtis, which defeated Auburn 41-14 at home earlier this season, beat Eastlake 21-14 in the first round last Friday to advance.

Against Skyview, Auburn senior Alphonse Wade – who left the game with an injury in the first half – got things started with a 30-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 53 seconds left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Auburn quarterback Max Pratt added to the Auburn lead with a 2-yard run and senior Dylan Rutledge returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown.

Skyview responded with two touchdowns to close out the first half, with Ellis Henderson running one in from 23 yards and quarterback Kieran McDonagh finding receiver Karl Graves in the end zone from 52 yards out with just 13 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, Auburn’s Austin Embody put up the team’s final score with a 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Skyview closed out scoring in the game in the fourth quarter with Parker Henry and McDonagh connecting for a 34-yard TD.

The Trojans dominated time of possession, holding on to the ball for more than 30 minutes in the game, including the final six minutes.

Auburn amassed 301 yards rushing, with Pratt carrying the ball 27 times for 117 yards. Embody touched the ball 13 times for 82 yards and Wade had five carries for 48 yards.

The Trojans held the Storm’s Henry to just 43 yards on 13 carries. Henderson had 65 yards on three carries.
